I. Ba Gua Foundational Intensive Weekend Training Modules

These three weekends of intensive training develop the foundation of Ba Gua as a martial art and internal energy system. Each day’s class consists of 6 hours training with a one hour break in the middle. Each class begins with 1.5 to two hours of Nei Gong followed by 4 to 4.5 hours of intensive Ba Gua Zhang training

Ba Gua Zhang Foundational Level: Module 1

  1. 28 Foundational Exercises
  2. Circle Walking Nei Gong (Ding Shi Ba Gua Zhang): Part 1
    -10 Basic Posture
    -Stepping and Turning Methods
  3. Nei Gong
    -Standing Meditation 1
    -Qi Cultivation Exercises
    -Walking Exercises 1: Slow Walk

Module 1 focuses on two core practices which create the proper foundation for real ability in Ba Gua Zhang. The 28 Foundational Exercises open and loosen all the joints in the body, while connecting the practitioner with the body’s inherent spiral forces. The 28 Foundational Exercises are the building blocks for advanced movements, and work synergistically with the second core practice Ba Gua Circle Walking Nei Gong (Ding Shi). The postures and stepping patterns of Circle Walking Nei Gong develop Ba Gua’s unique circular footwork, are critical to the development of circular, spiraling power, and contain many hidden self-defense applications.

Ba Gua Zhang Foundational Level: Module 2

  1. Review of key material from Module 1
  2. 12 Standing Postures
  3. Circle Walking Nei Gong (Ding Shi Ba Gua Zhang): Part 2
    -Advanced stepping and turning methods
-Martial applications of Downward Pressing Palm; Moon Embracing Palm and Mountain Pushing Palm
  4. Nei Gong
    -Standing Meditation 2
    -Nine Palace Dao Yin
    -Walking Exercises 2: Crane Step, Phoenix Walk, Koubu/Baibu Walks 1 & 2

Module 2 builds on Module 1. Students review the 28 Foundational Exercises and build on the basic Circle Walking practice by learning advanced footwork patterns and martial applications for three of the palms. Ba Gua’s 12 standing postures will also be explored. The 12 Standing Postures are a method of dynamic stance training that strengthens the entire body and stabilizes the joints. Each posture fully engages with spiral power configurations (wrapping, twisting, drilling, and coiling) which run through the body and produce integrated whole body power.

Ba Gua Zhang Foundational Level: Module 3

  1. Review of key material from Modules 1 and 2
  2. Foundational Partner Exercises: Part 1
  3. Circle Walking Nei Gong (Ding Shi Ba Gua Zhang): Part 3
    -Triangle Stepping
-Martial applications of the Heaven Uplifting Palm; Ball Holding Palm and Spear Holding Palm
  4. Nei Gong
-Circle Walking Nei Gong to open and clear the meridians
San Cai (Three Powers) Ding Shi

In Module 3 students deepen their understanding and practice of Circle Walking Nei Gong through understanding the meridian associations of each posture and by using Circle Walking Nei Gong as a form of walking meditation (San Cai Ding Shi). We will continue to explore martial applications of the Ding Shi postures in conjunction with the Foundational Partner Exercises. The partner exercises train power delivery, striking with different parts of the body, parries and blocks, and leg trapping, while teaching basic martial applications of Ba Gua Principles.
